The basic essence of digital citizenship is said in one question: how should we act when we are on the web and what should be taught to the next generation about digital citizenship? Answers to this may vary, but a very basic answer would be that we should respect others and ourselves whilst teaching others and new- comers to do the same. |
Another way digital citizenship can be described is as norms of appropriate and responsible behavior when on the web. These can be called the 9 elements. The first element is digital access; as productive citizens it is our job help make sure that no one is denied digital access or rights to anything. The second is digital commerce; we as citizens need to be aware that while it is convenient to do business online we have to be careful and aware of scams or frauds from dishonest internet users. The third is communication; this has changed many people's lives because they can now keep in contact with people from around the world at anytime, but we also must learn to be respectful of others and how to deal with situations if they arise. Digital literacy is the fourth, and as new technology is constantly be introduced learners must learn to be able to learn anything and everything, and those who have been taught must take it upon themselves to teach others.

The fifth element is digital etiquette, meaning the standards of conduct the we all need to strive for when in contact with others, and to report inappropriate behavior so it can be handled in the right way. The sixth is digital law; we need to take responsibility for our actions and deeds, and it is also our responsibility to make others take responsibility for their actions even if it is not our fault. Seven is the rights and responsibilities of digital citizens; we must define how technology is to be used in a way that makes everyone more productive. The eight is digital health and wellness; we must be educated and trained of how to avoid the dangers of the internet such as internet addiction, eye problems, and sometimes the added stress being a digital citizen can cause. And finally we must be mindful of our digital security such as virus protection and data backup. There are crucial pieces to being a digital citizen in a world where not everyone is always trust worthy.
Personally, as a digital citizen, I resolve to apply all nine of these elements to my citizenship, whether in gaming or any other place on the web. And I also plan to take on the responsibility to help others in becoming a digital citizen in any way I possibly can.
